THE PG GARAGE.

As a key part of Garage to Global and inspired by the concept that great businesses can be born out of a garage (as in the famous case of Hewlett Packard), PG Garage was founded as an ecentre initiative in 2007 to capture the essence of a garage: Innovation combined with high intensity knowledge workers, operating in a low cost environment.

The PG Garage has developed into a hot bed of innovation and entrepreneurship. The open workspace for postgraduate students encourages collaboration, honing of enterprise and business skills, interaction with successful entrepreneurs and networking with Hi Tech companies.

The ecentre assists students to connect with companies that can utilise their research or their expertise. In the longer term this will ensure more research aligned to business needs, more innovation by local companies and graduates who are better prepared for the Hi Tech sector.

This initiative has also been successful in attracting two high profile, locally based sponsors:

  • The Tindall Foundation
  • David Levene Charitable Trust

Objectives of the PG Garage

The ecentre pursues the following objectives when linking with Massey University students:

  • 1. Develop entrepreneurial skills
  • 2. Provide business experience
  • 3. Provide links to businesses and networking
  • 4. Provide ecentre with opportunities for early stage ventures
  • 5. Increase the number of high-quality collaborations between Massey University and business
  • 6. Provide access to increased levels of funding from:
    • Government
    • Participating businesses
    • Private sponsors
  • 7. Create relevant, well funded research opportunities for research teams
  • 8. Provide businesses with a highly effective alternative to in-house development

The ecentre continues to sponsor the programme through resources and seeks to extend and improve its activities to facilitate the best possible outcome for all parties involved.

Internships

The ecentre is developing an internship programme
which means students can gain valuable work experience as part of their degree.
The internship programme provides the opportunity for selected students to add another learning dimension to their education.

Sponsorship of student based activities

As part of its strong emphasis on equipping students with the right skills in order to build and grow sustainable, global businesses, the ecentre supports student organized activities such as the Business Idea Competition and the Business Strategy Competition run by the Business Student Group.

The ecentre at Massey University therefore provides innovative opportunities for students to develop their studies and enterprise skills.
